One Nation

This girl was saying that she calls herself Taiwanese, not Chinese, because she's "not Communist".

*bangs head*

UGH!  well just because I'm Chinese doesn't mean I'm a Communist and just because my relatives in China live in China doesn't mean they're Communists.  Why did my parents and relatives immigrate to America in the first place?  And even though they immigrated to America, why do we consider ourselves more Chinese than American?

You can appreciate culture without adhering to a government's political views.
Government does not equal citizens, especially in Communist countries

in other news, the APSA retreat was fun!  got to know more people.  hopefully APSA events will make newbies more open-minded

yeah that's pretty ridiculous.

immigrants consider themselves closer to their origins because we don't feel accepted here too much. it's kind of funny because if you go back to your origin, the people there may find you completely different from their culture or even "white'washed". that's how I kinda felt when i went back to vietnam last summer. my inability to speak vietnamese fluently really held me back from feeling a stronger connection with my family members. luckily, they understood that and even helped me get some of my vietnamese straightened out. anyways, ha ha i'm taking ethnic studies so we talk about this stuff a lot.

"government does not equal citizens" yes definitely.

i didn't know there were people like that...
actually, it kind of sounds like shes disrespecting her nationality by not willing to accept the culture there. and the ignorance of not understanding that americans will not judge your communist nationality as your belief. so ridiculous. she must not have been born in america...
